The second Metroid game, developed from the ground-up for Nintendo's black & white handheld, takes place some time after the NES original. Samus flies to the home planet of the Metroids, SR-388, an unstable place racked by earthquakes and torrents of lava. Many powerful breeds of Metroid thrive here and in the cavers below the surface. Samus roots them all out, eventually destroying the Metroid Queen. A baby Metroid hatches immediately after the battle and imprints upon Samus. Thinking Samus is her mother, it helps her escape. Samus then turns the hatchling over to the Galactic Federation, thinking that researching it might prove fruitful. Gameplay itself is classic sidescrolling, shooting, and puzzle solving, with plenty of alien encounters.

It's hard to believe that these titles are only 10 years old, considering how far role-playing games have come over the years. In fact, Dragon Warrior actually defined the beloved RPG genre for video game consoles. It began the whole system of turn-based battles against monsters, land roaming, and building character experience through fighting. And, now, all of this is back for younger players to enjoy for the first time, and for older players to relish once again. It must be stated that these games, while they have been improved, are essentially the same as they were earlier, with these exceptions: names of people and places have been altered--which will disappoint only those who have played the originals--and the graphics are more detailed than before. The differences between the two titles play almost like a history lesson in RPGs. In the first game, players travel as a single character who's set to rescue a princess and slay a dragon. In the second game, players manage a party of four heroes, each of whom has his or her own unique talents in magic or weaponry (or both). The game pits them against multiple enemies at a time, as opposed to a single foe. Also, the addition of a save-anytime feature eliminates needless retread. It could very easily be the plot of a half-hour SIMPSONS episode: Bart is on a game show that requires him earn a certain amount of money in order to emerge victorious and make it to the next week. Each week's show features a course that matches a character from THE SIMPSONS cartoon series: Apu has a full-on obstacle course set up in the Kwik-E-Mart on one level, while Robosaurus lords over another. Just like in Soko-Ban, it is your goal to push a number of crates onto certain spots in order to finish a level. Finding the right way to move all the crates on the right spots becomes increasingly difficult and you have to plan numerous steps in advance in order not to block your own way. The game features 10 levels with 10 sub-levels each. You can always choose the order in which you want to complete the sub-levels, but you have to complete all sub-levels in order to advance to the next main-level. If you have finished the game or become hopelessly stuck, there is also an option to create your own levels.
